“Alguém vê alguém pedindo pão no caixa da padaria? Você não vê, pô”.

Querer pintar um Brasil onde não há fome beira o surreal até mesmo para os padrões do indivíduo eleito para ocupar a presidência da República. Basta ir além de cercadinhos. Cada esquina ou praça de qualquer grande cidade escancara: vivemos num país onde mais de 125 milhões de cidadãos têm dúvidas de se e de quando terão comida no prato.

Vejo a fome alastrada pelo Brasil e me lembro de Carolina Maria de Jesus. . Milhões de barrigas permanecem vazias e agora são tratadas com desdém pelo sujeito no poder, por isso volto ao duro livro da autora, um dos momentos mais altos de nossa literatura.

Carolina se mostrava cética com os rumos do Brasil em seus diários da década de 1950. Num dos trechos mais emblemáticos, escreve que a democracia se enfraquecia e perdia seus “adeptos” enquanto o dinheiro e os políticos também eram fraquíssimos. “E tudo que está fraco, morre um dia”, vaticinou anos antes do golpe de 1964. Atemorizada pela dispensa vazia, tentava se refugiar no mundo onírico. “O povo brasileiro só é feliz quando está dormindo”.

É a entrada do dia 16 de maio de 1958 que merece atenção diante do escárnio presidencial. “Eu amanheci nervosa. Porque eu queria ficar em casa, mas eu não tinha nada para comer”, começa a autora. “Eu não ia comer porque o pão era pouco. Será que é só eu que levo esta vida? O que posso esperar do futuro? Um leito em Campos do Jordão. Eu quando estou com fome quero matar o Janio, quero enforcar o Adhemar e queimar o Juscelino. As dificuldades corta o afeto do povo pelos politicos”.

Jânio Quadros, Ademar de Barros, Juscelino Kubitschek, todos políticos. Fica o recado de Carolina para aqueles que menosprezam a fome e os milhões de famintos espalhados pelo Brasil. Não é sereno o sentimento de quem passa o dia em busca de ao menos um pedaço de pão.
